David Johns

Founder / Consultant

In the dim dark ages I was an Audit Manager for a national accounting practice responsible for listed company and medium sized business audits. It was good grounding but my preference became involvement with, and providing assistance to small business in respect to tax and accounting requirements. This entailed 3 years as a partner in a different national accounting practice.

The background and experience in audit and tax from both national accounting firms provided me with what I believe was, and still is, a good basis to service and assist small, medium and large business. Large firm politics prevailed and being a people person, the big decision was made to start DW Johns & Co in April 1988.

Subsequently I became an Authorised Representative of a financial planning group to ensure clients were receiving proper advice because at that time the financial planning industry was very sales orientated. With subsequent industry improvement and regulation, I then chose to form a professional association with trusted advisers in that area and again concentrate on the traditional accounting requirements.

That period reflects my belief. Clients come first and I endeavour to provide what is required, even getting new skills. In such a far reaching business environment I believe trust is important. If asked, and it is not my area or don’t know, I will be truthful but also direct enquiries to appropriate professionals. Other times, “yep, can handle that” and clients rely on appropriate advice. Fast forward, there have been many changes and I have been so fortunate with the professionals who make up the team at DW Johns & Co. I rely on them and clients can too. It is truly satisfying to continue in a capacity as consultant with people I respect and reflect that friends became clients and clients became friends.

Continuing to work less hours means I still can avoid the gardening, decreases the frustrations experienced at golf, ample time to catch up with 4 adult children, have the occasional punt on horses whilst still socialising with work colleagues, clients/friends.
